Bridge and Civil were contracted to carry out the removal of the current timber deck, fabrication, and installation of a new steel trough deck and associated works on the Taradale Viaduct on the Sunbury to Bendigo Line.
The original bridge structure was constructed between 1858 and 1862. The bridge comprises of two track deck-type viaduct over Back Creek consisting of 5 spans of wrought iron box girders supported on bluestone piers. There are 4 similar box girder side-by-side each being 2400mm deep by 610mm wide of riveted construction and are continuous through the 5 spans.
The total length of the bridge is 198 metres. The spans are 3 by (39.6 m) in the centre and the end spans adjacent to the abutments are 37.6 m. The highest point above the valley floor is 36 metres. The girders are supported on roller bearings, made up of 13 x 31⁄2 inch wrought iron rollers between cast iron bearing plates on all supports except where they are fixed at Pier No.3.
All works required were completed during the rail occupation from 00:01hrs on 3 October 2016 to 1700hrs on 26 October 2016.
